Clinical Research

PH Javara

Our Practice Participates in Clinical Trials in Partnership with Javara.
Discuss with your Physician Today.

We conduct clinical trials to help find new and better ways of preventing, diagnosing and treating disease.  Results from clinical trials help determine if a medicine or medical device is ready to go to market.

As a participant in a trial, you may receive access to treatments and diagnostics that may not otherwise be available and that could potentially lead to improved health outcomes.  Additionally, you may receive compensation for study time and/or travel.

If you are potentially eligible for a study, you may be contacted by a Javara research team member on our behalf to see if you are interested.  Privia’s Notice of Privacy Practices describes how your data may be shared with our trusted partners for research purposes.  Participation in a clinical trial is always 100% optional and your access to medical care will not be impacted if you choose not to participate.

We offer clinical trials that we believe will allow us to improve the quality of care of our patients.  Read our letter to patients about clinical research here.

DEXA Body Scan

What is a DEXA Body Scan?

Body Composition Analysis provides detailed and accurate information about overall health and athletic performance. Using Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA), a breakdown is provided that distinguishes between lean body mass, fat mass, and bone mass, therefore providing the most accurate picture of body weight.

Why is the DEXA technology the gold standard?

The scanner uses a 3D model to produce color images of the bone and the soft tissue and compiles the information into an easy to read report. Fat tissue mass and lean muscle mass percentages for the total body as well as the arms, legs, and torso are provided.

This information is useful for many applications, including for the weightlifter who wants to monitor muscle growth and fat loss, as well as for the person who has decided to make dietary changes and wants to track their weight loss progress.

The results from the DEXA scan are highly reproducible and have been validated through repeated scientific studies. No other technique can match the accuracy and precision of a DEXA scan.

How is the scan performed?

The exam is simple, painless, and non-invasive. The patient will lie on their backs on the DEXA table for approximately 8 minutes. The scanner will move above them and take a picture of their whole body. The radiation exposure is less than 1/20th of a chest x-ray (less than a daily dose of natural radiation exposure).

You should wear loose fitting clothing with no metal zippers or buttons, and no jewelry. If you have any metal implants, breast implants, or a pacemaker, we will not be able to complete a scan on you

How much does the test cost?

Insurance does not pay for this procedure, however, we offer individual scans at a very affordable price of $75 per scan. We also offer multi-scan packages at a reduced cost and that can be scheduled at your desired intervals.

Interpreting your results

For a thorough interpretation of your results, take your report to your next physician visit, or see the following resources:

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis

For older patients, osteoporosis is a real threat. This silent disease, in which bones become thin, weak and more easily breakable, can result in stooped posture, the loss of independence, and dangerous, painful fractures of the hip, spine, and wrist.

Hip fractures, the most serious consequence of osteoporosis, is linked to as many as 50,000 deaths each year. Complications from surgery or from being confined to bed cause most of these mortalities.

While 80 percent of the 28 million Americans who develop osteoporosis are women, 1 in 8 men over age 50 will also have a broken bone as a result of the disease.

At AIM, we identify patients at risk of osteoporosis, and help you take steps to prevent or treat it. Risk factors include having a petite frame, having an inactive lifestyle, excessive use of alcohol, a low-calcium diet, estrogen deficiency and advanced age.

Using a quick and painless method to measure your bone mass, we can determine whether to begin a prevention or treatment program.

Hypertension

Hypertension

Many people who have hypertension – or high blood pressure – don’t know it. It usually has no symptoms. Between 20 and 50 percent of natural deaths can be linked to this silent killer.

When you have hypertension, your blood vessels become constricted, causing your heart to pump harder to push blood through your body. That, in turn, makes your blood press with greater force against vessel walls. Over time, fatty deposits may build up, hardening your arteries. Your heart must labor even harder to pump blood through hardened arteries.

Obesity, smoking, diabetes, taking birth control pills and a high-fat, high-salt diet are among the factors that can lead to high blood pressure.

Some risk factors – like being male or having a family history of early heart attack or stroke – are inherited. AIM has the expertise and equipment to identify your risk of high blood pressure and to help you cope if you have it.

Sometimes, the disease can be managed by lifestyle changes. In other cases, medication may be prescribed. You can count on AIM to help you keep your blood pressure under control.

Geriatrics

Geriatrics

More and more Americans are living longer than ever before. But longevity alone isn’t sufficient – what’s important to older adults is being healthy and independent enough to enjoy their golden years. That’s a sentiment AIM shares.

We have assembled equipment, expertise, and programs to help older patients cope with special health care needs related to aging.

All of AIM’s ten physicians are board-certified in internal medicine, and one is also board-certified in geriatrics, the branch of medicine that focuses on health promotion and the prevention and treatment of disease and disability later in life.

That means AIM offers healthcare services geared toward the unique and, oftentimes, multiple health concerns of patients 65 and older.

We’re also happy to offer support and resources for the caregivers of our older adult patients.

Diabetes

Diabetes

Roughly 17 million Americans have diabetes, a disorder that affects the way your body transforms the food you eat into growth and energy. Untreated, Type II diabetes can cause kidney failure, limb amputation, and blindness.

Further, those who have Type II diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease. Unfortunately, those who have the disease don’t always recognize its symptoms.

But AIM knows what to look for – and, with early detection, we may be able to help you make lifestyle changes to prevent full-blown diabetes from taking hold. Diet, exercise and behavior modification can help combat the disease.

If you do develop diabetes, we offer comprehensive diabetes education and treatment. AIM can help manage your condition so that you can live a full and happy life.

Cardiovascular Disease

Cardiovascular Disease

Every day, more than 2,600 people die from cardiovascular disease. In fact, cardiovascular disease – principally heart disease and stroke – is the leading cause of death in the United States for men and women in all racial and ethnic groups.

Cardiovascular disease has no respect for age, either. It’s the leading cause of death for all Americans age 35 and older. Yet the staggering cardiovascular death rate is only part of the toll this disease takes. Heart disease and stroke account for nearly 6 million hospital admissions annually and cause disability for roughly 10 million Americans.

Consequently, AIM takes a serious, aggressive approach to cardiovascular disease. Using the most up-to-date equipment, we monitor our patients closely for signs the condition is developing.

We work with patients to overcome health-related behaviors that can increase their risk. Should cardiovascular disease strike, we’ll work closely with your heart specialists to help you recover.

With prompt treatment, good follow-up care and regular check-ups, AIM can help patients fight back against this deadly disease.

Arthritis

Arthritis

Approximately one in every six Americans suffers from arthritis, a term that means joint inflammation. The two most common forms are osteoarthritis, which afflicts more than 20 million Americans, and rheumatoid arthritis, which affects 2.1 million.

Regardless of the form, arthritis typically results in swollen, stiff, painful joints.

Although the risk of developing arthritis increases with age, AIM can offer strategies and treatments to help patients cope. Obesity – particularly among women – has been linked to osteoarthritis.

So AIM’s professionals can steer you toward diet and exercise to help control weight and minimize the stress on weight-bearing joints, like your knees. A variety of prescription medicines are also available.

If you’re plagued by pain and inflammation of the joints, AIM can help bring relief to get you moving again.

Bone Densitometry

Bone Densitometry

bonedensityxrayBone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. Bone density scanning is today’s established standard for measuring bone mineral density. Bone density scanning is most often performed on the lower spine and hips. In some adults, the whole body is sometimes scanned. Bone density scanning is most often used to diagnose osteoporosis, a condition that often affects women after menopause but may also be found in men. Osteoporosis involves a gradual loss of calcium, as well as structural changes, causing the bones to become thinner, more fragile and more likely to break. Bone density scanning is also effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. Bone density scanning can also access an individual’s risk for developing fractures. The risk of fracture is affected by age, body weight, history of prior fracture, family history of osteoporotic fractures and life style issues such as cigarette smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. These factors are taken into consideration when deciding if a patient needs therapy.

Vascular Studies

Vascular Studies

vascularlab

Vascular Studies – These non-invasive tests are beneficial in the assessment of peripheral vascular disease or circulation disorders. Using various ultrasound and pressure recording techniques, the arteries and veins of the extremities can be studied. In addition, these exams can identify abnormalities in the carotid arteries of the neck and also abdominal aorta.

Vascular Studies of the Extremities – These non-invasive tests are beneficial in the assessment of Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). Using various ultrasound and pressure recording technology the arteries of the extremities can be studied. Sometimes the treadmill is used in symptomatic patients. The ankle pressures are reported following a few minutes of walking to further assess PAD. Also using ultrasound with color-flow and Doppler the veins can be assessed for the presence of Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT).

Electromyogram

Electromyogram

An electromyogram (EMG) measures the electrical activity of muscles at rest and during contraction. Nerve conduction studies measure how well and how fast the nerves can send electrical signals. Nerves control the muscles in the body by electrical signals (impulses), and these impulses make the muscles react in specific ways. Nerve and muscle disorders cause the muscles to react in abnormal ways. Measuring the electrical activity in muscles and nerves can help find diseases that damage muscle tissue (such as muscular dystrophy) or nerves (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or peripheral neuropathies). EMG and nerve conduction studies are often done together to give more complete information.

PRT Spirometry

PRT Spirometry

Lung function tests (also called pulmonary function tests, or PFTs) evaluate how well your lungs work. The tests determine how much air your lungs can hold, how quickly you can move air in and out of your lungs, and how well your lungs put oxygen into and remove carbon dioxide from your blood. The tests can diagnose lung diseases, measure the severity of lung problems, and check to see how well treatment for a lung disease is working.

Diabetes Education

Diabetes Education

diabeteseducationDiabetes education focuses on ways to incorporate disease management principles into the individual’s daily life and minimize dependence on the health care provider. There are three areas that our Diabetic Educator focuses on: basic disease management including basic survivor skills, home management, and improvement of lifestyle. Our diabetic education is designed for both the newly diagnosed diabetic and those who need additional help controlling their diabetic disease.

Home Sleep Study

Home Sleep Study

There are two general ways to test for obstructive sleep apnea – patients can visit a sleep center in a hospital or stand-alone facility for an overnight technician monitored test, or they can take a test at home in their own bed. Most insurance plans require that you have had a home sleep study before authorizing a sleep center administered test. The cost of a home sleep study is considerably less. Testing can typically be completed with one night of study. A board certified sleep medicine physician will read your study and report your results and recommendations to your Albany Internal Medicine physician.
